A Medieval St. Nicholas Play

The tales of wonder surrounding Nikolaus of Myra made him one of the most popular saints to whom many groups of Medieval society could relate: sailors, traders and merchants but also prostitutes and thieves. Much later a link to children and handing out gifts in wintertime was established.

“Tres Filiae” tells the story of a father to poor to pay for a dowry and find a good marriage for his daughters. For each of them poverty and prostitution looms - but St. Nicholas comes to rescue.

Embedded in a vesper liturgy “Tres Filiae” is a marvelous example for a 12th century church drama, which made it possible to relate the stories about St. Nicholas to an audience of people few of whom could read and write.
