1400-talets klavermusik norr och söder om Alperna

Manuskriptet Codex Faenza nedtecknades mellan 1430 och 1440. Det består mestadels av virtuosa parafraser av italiensk och fransk musik från 1300-talets slut samt några tidiga exempel på författande av orgelmässa.

Partituren klargör inte vilket instrument som ursprungligen åsyftades. Tonomfånget passar mycket bra till harpan eller till något klaverinstrument. Denna musik kunde ha spelats på två lutor eller kombinerande av stråkinstrument med plockinstrument trots att större gambor som kunde ha använts till lägre stämmor inte förekom under denna epok i Italien. Det är verkligen intressant att spela Faenza varianten ansikte mot ansikte tillsammans med det vokala originalet.

Orgelboken från Buxheim, förfärdigad mellan 1450 och 1470, är den mest omfattande skriftliga dokumentationen om den sydtyska klavermusiken. Dess stycken är i de flesta fall intavoleringar på Nederländska skolans moderna vokalmusik. Förutom dessa finns det även många tidigare stycken som tonsatts nästan i medeltidens anda av andra tyska komponister. Dessa är till exempel improvisationer samt intonationer med långt betonade klangfärger i olika tonarter.

Det är otvivelaktigt att sådan musik komponerades för klaverinstrument tonsatt mellan B – f“. Det kan vara lämpligast med den gotiska orgeln, med clavicytherium eller med klavikord.
