Fünf ganz außergewöhnliche Kantaten für Sopran, die mit einem enormen Stimmumfang große Emotionen aufreißen. Randy ist hier absolut atemberaubend, wie er aus dem Alt-Register in die Stratosphere abhebt. Wir haben einige dieser Stücle auf den Festivals in Berkeley und Santa Cruz aufgeführt, bevor wir ins Studio gingen. Die meisten Sätze wurden mit einem einzigen Take aufgenommen. Reine Glückseligkeit!

The USP of this disc is a male soprano voice. And what a voice it is. Randall Wong's range is severely tested in the first cantata RV 667 with its three octaves vocal range and it holds up extremely well. The musics range is probably why this cantata is not recorded more often as it would test the vocal ability of the best female sopranos. The rest of the programme of cantatas consist of RV 678, 651, 660 and 680 and are superbly done by Wong. The instrumental soloists in RV 678 and 680 are Leta Miller, Flute and Elizabeth Blumenstock, Violin, respectively with the Continuo group consisting of Paul Hale, Cello and Linda Burman-Hall, Harpsichord with Michael Dollendorf, Bassoon, in the cantata RV 680. All the instrumentalists are excellent and contribute to this discs undoubted success. The disc booklet has a article on the works by the singer and has the Italian texts with English translations. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it is well worth it's place in anyone's collection. Highly recommended.

Das schönste was jemals für Fagott geschrieben wurde. Höre Dir Télaires "Tristes apprêts, pâles flambeaux" am Anfang des ersten Akts an. Vier Fagotte im pianissimo. Nie hat jemand bessere Begräbnismusik bekommen als Castor.

Die beiden Mädel, Anne Pichard und Anne Mopin, sind mit zwei Musetten, diesen süßen kleinen französischen Dudelsäcken, und zwei Fagotten gruppiert. Ich spiele im 2. Team, mein Freund Jean-Louis Fiat ist in der ersten Gruppe. Hör Dir die schönen Echos an!

Michael Dollendorf - Barock-Kontafagott
Dies ist meines Wissens die erste Aufnahme, die mit Kontrafagott gemacht wurde. Bach hat es vorgeschrieben, als er die Johannespassion 1725 überarbeitete. Mein Instrument ist eine Kopie nach Thomas Stanesby, London, 1739, jetzt im National Museum of Ireland. Es wurde 1984 by G. & M. Lyndon-Jones gebaut. Ich habe es genommen, weil unser Orchester auf a=415 spielte wie die meisten "modernen Barockorchester", auch wenn wir wissen, das Bachs Stimmton deutlich (10-15 Hz) tiefer gewesen sein muss. Dort steht das Instrument von Andreas Eichentopf, das zeitlich und geographisch die natürlichere Wahl gewesen wäre.
Jahre später war ich für Aufnahmen und Konzerte mit dem Baroque Orchestra of Ireland, Dir. Kevin Mallon, in Dublin und nahm mein Instrument mit ins Museum. Die freundlichen Mitarbeiter waren sehr daran interessiert meine Kopie neben dem Original zu hören.

Händel liebte es das Kontrafagott in seinen Oratorienaufführungen und in der 'Music for the Royal Firework' einzusetzen. Er verlangte dafür sogar 4 Kontrafagotte und 12 normale Fagotte. Es gibt eine Originalstimme in 'Alexander's Feast', das wir mit Philharmonia ein Jahr vor Susanna gemacht haben. Es klang so gut, dass Nick mich gebeten hat auch auf der Aufnahme von Susanna Kontrafagott zu spielen.
Meine Lieblingsstelle: Teil I, Szene 1, William Parker singt Chelias "Peace crown'd with roses". Seine wunderbare tiefe, warme, weiche Stimme und das Kontrafagott darunter sind eine perfekte Kombination. Wir vermissen ihn sehr!
